A Beatle Song

A BEATLE SONG

Someone heard me performing my songs at The Bulls (a Chicago bar) in 1976 and invited me to join a band. I asked what kind of music they played. Oh, Beatles, Stones, the usual, you know. Well, I mused, you can’t go wrong with a Beatle song, and simultaneously the muse became my cue for "A Beatle Song." I started writing lyrics the same evening, completed the song the next day, and a couple of years later won a prize ($50) for the song in the annual American Song Festival Contest.

Entertainers have a hard time deciding how to play for a crowd
Is the music just right, or is it too soft, or maybe it’s too loud
Is the mike just right, or is it too low, or maybe it’s too high
Well, I’ll sing what I like right into the mike cause the music’s gonna get me by

Because you can’t go wrong with a Beatle song
You hold your own with the Rolling Stones
You get a happy noise with the Beach Boys
You put your soul into rock and roll
And if you’re looking to please everybody you know, if you’re looking to please all the people
Give them the Beatles

So give them Yesterday and She Loves You
Don’t Let Me Down or baby I’ll Get You
Think for Yourself cause I’m Looking Through You
So please Help me girl and just Love Me Do, Just Love Me Do

I walk in a daze like I’m in a maze, it’s time for me to take the floor
It’s a long long minute when I’m the one in it, I wish I were taking the door
Is the crowd concerned or am I gonna be burned no matter how hard I try
Well, I’ll sing what I like right into the mike cause the music’s gonna get me by

Because you can’t go wrong …

Oh, Darling Julia, I Wanna Be Your Man
Martha, My Dear, I Wanna Hold Your Hand
Hey, Jude, I Got a Feeling for you
Michelle, my belle, I Love You Too. I Love You Too

Sometimes onstage I get so afraid I forget just what I had planned
I swallow my tongue and then I lose my guns, I can’t even find my hands
There’s a guy in the crowd who’s talking so loud so I swallow and I sigh
And then I sing what I like right into the mike cause the music’s gonna get me by

Because you can’t go wrong …

I’ve had A Hard Day’s Night so won’t you Hold Me Tight
We Can Work It Out before we say Goodnight
Don’t Ask Me Why but Please Please Me
Be my Honey Pie and then let’s Let It Be. Let’s Let It Be

So if you’ve a gripe about the music I write I won’t keep you very long
I’ll do my bit and at the end of it sing you a Beatle song
I’ll sing their hits for your, I’ll sing their misses too, and if you ask me why
I’ll say I sing what I like right into the mike cause the music’s gonna get me by

Because you can’t go wrong …
